Hospitals across Leicester have implemented a mandatory face mask policy. This measure, enacted by the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, follows an increase in patients presenting with infectious diseases. The requirement extends to visitors, staff, and outpatients within clinical settings, with the stated aim of supporting patient care and staff wellbeing. The trust, which manages Leicester General Hospital, Leicester Royal Infirmary, and Glenfield Hospital, indicated that the decision was prompted by a rising number of patients receiving treatment for infectious illnesses, including flu, norovirus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and Covid. These clinical environments comprise wards, examination and treatment rooms, waiting areas, and all outpatient services. The trust further stated: “We are also seeing an increase in the level of colleague absence due to seasonal illnesses.” It added that “Any increase in patient cases and reduction in colleague numbers can have a significant impact on how quickly we can provide patients with the right care, at the right time.” The trust confirmed its intention to keep the situation under continuous review. Dr. Laura French, a member of Leicester City Council’s public health team, remarked: “Covid, flu and RSV are viruses that can make people really unwell with cough, fever, headaches and cold-like symptoms.” She observed that “They are often known as ‘winter viruses’ and are likely to peak in the coming weeks.” Dr. French highlighted that the most effective method for protecting oneself and others from these viruses is vaccination, for those who are eligible. Additionally, she recommended frequent handwashing, adequate fluid intake, and resting when feeling unwell.
