Gloucester winger Ollie Thorley will be unavailable for the remainder of the current season, having sustained a knee injury during the team’s Premiership match against Northampton last month. Additionally, number eight Zach Mercer faces an indefinite period on the sidelines due to a knee injury necessitating surgical intervention. Thorley, aged 28, exited the match after 19 minutes during the away victory against Saints on November 30. Mercer also departed the field in the latter stages of the same fixture. George Skivington, Gloucester’s director of rugby, commented on Thorley’s injury to BBC Radio Gloucestershire, stating: “It’s a nasty one and he’s been playing really well and he’s a really key part of what we do. He’s a great bloke – Gloucester through-and-through. It’s an innocuous one, doesn’t seem too much in it and he was pretty buoyant after the game so I didn’t think it was too bad. It’s one of those where you have to do the rehab and come back fitter and stronger but unfortunately for this season that’s Ollie done.” Mercer, 27, has been a consistent presence as the starting number eight, participating in nearly every minute of Gloucester’s seven Premiership fixtures this season. He left the field in the final moments at Franklin’s Gardens, having scored a try in the 25-17 victory. Skivington characterized the 27-year-old’s injury as “not good news.” Skivington further elaborated on Mercer’s condition: “Zach’s is a little bit more complicated so I’m not sure the exact timeline, but there is surgery involved in it, it’s not good news whatever it is. But we’ll wait and see. I couldn’t give you an exact timeline involved in that but it’s not positive.” Gloucester is scheduled to resume Premiership play on Friday with a home match against Harlequins. This follows their performance in the European Challenge Cup campaign, where they recorded one win and one loss in their initial two group stage encounters against Edinburgh and RC Vannes. Skivington indicated that he is not currently seeking to recruit new players as injury replacements for Thorley or Mercer, expressing confidence in the existing squad’s depth to adequately cover their absence. He stated: “There won’t be anything happening short term at the moment. Ollie’s hard boots to fill, definitely, but it will open up opportunities for now. We’ve mixed and matched in the back row quite a lot so Zach’s a loss and it’s unfortunate but everyone’s got good time under their belt. They’ve played well, it’s a very competitive position for us especially with some young guys coming through behind Rue [Ruan Ackermann] and Luds [Lewis Ludlow].” Skivington also mentioned that he implemented extensive changes to the squad for the recent trip to France last Sunday, where the team suffered a 43-19 defeat, with the upcoming Premiership schedule as a primary consideration. The match against Harlequins marks the initial fixture in a series of three scheduled over the festive season, which also includes an away game against Exeter on December 29 and a home game versus Sale on January 4. “To expect a team to front up in France, travel back Sunday night and be ready for Friday I don’t think is unrealistic. Our hand was forced a little bit,” Skivington commented, adding, “We used the week sensibly to make sure the international guys freshened up a bit.” Post navigation Noteworthy Facts and Updates Matt ‘Panda’ Smyth Crowned World’s Strongest Disabled Man, Reflects on Journey
