A significant section of a bypass connecting Gloucester and Cheltenham is scheduled for closure this weekend due to ongoing works. Specifically, the westbound carriageway of the A40 Golden Valley bypass will be inaccessible between M5 junction 11 and the Elmbridge Court roundabout to facilitate resurfacing operations. This segment of the carriageway is slated to be shut down from 20:00 GMT on Friday until 06:00 GMT on Monday. According to National Highways, this resurfacing project is expected to enhance safety and decrease the frequency of unscheduled repair-related closures. Following the reopening of the carriageway, the entire stretch between Elmbridge Court and Arle Court roundabouts will undergo overnight closures, from 20:00 GMT to 06:00 GMT, starting Monday and continuing until 19 November. Motorists are advised to make advance travel arrangements and allocate additional time for their trips. During the weekend closure period, motorists can reach Cheltenham by using M5 junction 11, or access Gloucester through the B4063 diversion route or from junction 11A. On weeknights, those exiting the M5 at junction 11 will have access to the A40, exclusively in the eastbound direction, with specific diversion routes also established for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs). Kevin Gibbs, a Project Manager for National Highways, stated: “To minimise disruption, we’re carrying out the work on the one weekend and weeknights when traffic flows are at their lowest.“We understand that road closures can be frustrating, we’re keeping the closures to an absolute minimum and we thank all drivers in advance for their co-operation and patience while we carry out these essential works.” For updates, BBC Gloucestershire can be followed on Facebook, X and Instagram.
