The theatre company The Herd has developed a play area constructed entirely from recycled and repurposed materials. This facility, located at Princes Quay Shopping Centre in Hull, offers a free play space for families with children up to five years old. Its creation follows the company’s successful ‘Replay’ project, a recycled playground previously established at the Southbank Centre in London. This temporary recreational space will operate weekly on Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 10:00 to 15:00 BST, with its availability concluding on 28 November. The creators at The Herd express their aspiration that this initiative will encourage adults to reconsider their perceptions of waste and broaden their understanding of what constitutes a toy. Ruby Thompson, the theatre director, commented: “Adults are always talking about how children have more fun with the cardboard box than the toy. We’re really excited to be bringing free open-ended play to Hull city centre.” Listeners can find highlights from Hull and East Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, watch the latest episode of Look North, or submit potential story ideas.
