A former police officer has received a sentence after being found guilty of attempting to initiate sexual communication with a minor. Ryan Clinton, aged 30, from Tamworth, received his sentence on Thursday at Stafford Crown Court. He had previously entered a guilty plea to the charge at Cannock Magistrates’ Court on October 16. The individual, who was a Staffordshire Police officer when the offence occurred, was given a two-year community service order, which includes up to 40 days of community requirements, six months of mental health treatment, and 100 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, he was added to the sex offenders register for a period of five years, issued a five-year sexual harm prevention order, and prohibited from employment in law enforcement in the future. Clinton engaged in communication with an individual impersonating a 13-year-old girl via a social media platform on December 4 and 5, 2023. He was apprehended, and his mobile phone was confiscated from his residence on December 5, 2023. According to police statements, Clinton confessed to the offence during an interview and subsequently resigned from his position. A misconduct hearing, which took place on November 28 and was presided over by Chief Constable Chris Noble, determined that there was sufficient evidence of gross misconduct and that Clinton would have faced dismissal if he had not already resigned. He is set to be included on the College of Policing’s barred list, which will preclude him from employment within policing and other law enforcement agencies. Deputy Chief Constable Jon Roy commented: “Clinton’s actions were abhorrent and his behaviour is totally at odds with the oath that he took when he became a police officer and what the public rightly expect.” He further stated: “Clinton’s offending was identified, investigated and acted upon quickly, leading to him pleading guilty at the first opportunity and his conviction at court.” Further updates from BBC Stoke & Staffordshire can be accessed via BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram platforms.
