Head coach Andy Farrell is anticipated to implement squad adjustments for Ireland’s third of four matches scheduled this month. Ireland’s performance in the autumn internationals has not met expectations, following consecutive Six Nations titles and a significant victory in South Africa. The team experienced a substantial defeat by New Zealand, struggling against the All Blacks, and subsequently secured a narrow win against a revitalized Argentina in Dublin on Friday. With Fiji set to play at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, Farrell has indicated potential changes to refresh his team. BBC Sport has examined several prospective selections. Sam Prendergast, a 21-year-old fly-half from Leinster with one cap, debuted for Ireland in the second half against Argentina. Prendergast is a highly anticipated prospect. Farrell’s decision to introduce the young player during a challenging period against the Pumas was notable, and Prendergast performed creditably. Following his debut on Friday, a first start for Ireland against Fiji appears to be a logical progression. This opportunity would allow Farrell to observe Prendergast’s ability to direct play from the outset and demonstrate his leadership within a potentially younger backline. While Jack Crowley and Ciaran Frawley are also contenders, providing Farrell with numerous fly-half choices, Prendergast is projected to feature prominently in future discussions. Cormac Izuchukwu, a 24-year-old uncapped second row/flanker from Ulster, is the only player from Farrell’s initial 35-man panel yet to earn a cap, following Prendergast’s debut against the Pumas. An international debut for Izuchukwu is widely expected. He is highly regarded by Farrell and the Ireland coaching staff, and a first international appearance is seen as a natural next step. The 24-year-old’s versatility is a significant asset, as he can operate in the second row or as a loose forward. He wore the number six jersey for Emerging Ireland in September, where he was a key leader, and has played both lock and back row for Ulster. Izuchukwu’s strong performances have brought him to prominence, and the match against Fiji could present an opportune moment for his international introduction. Calvin Nash, a 27-year-old wing from Munster with eight caps, scored two tries in the 2024 Six Nations. Initial concerns arose when Mack Hansen was sidelined from the Six Nations due to injury, but these subsided as Nash performed strongly. The Munster wing demonstrated robust defense and scored two tries, against Italy and France, contributing to Ireland’s consecutive Six Nations titles. Nash, 27, maintained his strong form during the summer, starting both matches against South Africa in July. He was unfortunately omitted from the squad upon Hansen’s return to fitness. However, with the Connacht wing not yet at peak performance since his comeback, this could be an opportune moment for Nash to attempt to regain the 14 jersey. Jacob Stockdale, a 28-year-old wing/full-back from Ulster with 37 caps, earned his last two Ireland caps in warm-up matches preceding the 2023 World Cup in France. After his breakthrough in 2017, Stockdale appeared set to secure Ireland’s left-wing position for an extended period. Nevertheless, injuries and a subsequent decline in form led to his absence from the international squad. The 28-year-old has since regained his top form with Ulster, which has brought him back into consideration for Ireland. His try-scoring record for Ireland remains impressive, with 19 tries in 37 caps, a tally surpassed by only five other players in Ireland’s history. Should he be selected against Fiji, he will aim to increase his try count and challenge first-choice left wing James Lowe. Cian Prendergast, a 24-year-old back row from Connacht with three caps, was appointed as Connacht’s new captain. While his younger brother is a skilled fly-half, Cian Prendergast operates as a more conventional back row forward. Since transferring to Connacht from Leinster in 2020, Prendergast has become a key player for the western province and was named captain for the current season. His international advancement has been slower due to Ireland’s strong back row options; his most recent of three international caps was earned in the 2023 Six Nations. If Farrell seeks to introduce new players into the forward pack, Prendergast could be considered for an opportunity to increase his cap tally against the Pacific Islanders. Ulster back row Nick Timoney represents another potential selection for the forward pack. Meanwhile, Jamie Osborne of Leinster is a candidate for another start in the backline, having previously deputized for Hugo Keenan against South Africa in the summer and made two impactful appearances from the bench this month.
