Organisers have revealed that a prominent rugby league player is set to activate Hull’s Christmas lights. Mikey Lewis, who plays as a half-back for Hull KR and England, received the Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel award last month, recognizing him as the sport’s player of the year. Mr. Lewis will spearhead the festivities scheduled for Queen Victoria Square, where a 50ft-tall (15m) Norwegian spruce tree is slated for illumination. According to Hull City Council, the occasion will feature light and sound installations and is anticipated to draw a “fantastic crowd.” Last season, Lewis, a native of Hull, scored 19 tries for the Robins, contributing to their advancement to their inaugural Super League Grand Final. The entertainment is scheduled to commence at 17:30 GMT. The Christmas lights will be activated at 18:45 by Lewis, alongside the Lord Mayor of Hull and Father Christmas. The council stated that the event will showcase “a host of live performers from State of the Arts Academy,” a performing arts group based locally. BBC Radio Humberside presenters Kofi Smiles and Carla Greene are set to join host DJ Darren Lethem on the balcony of Hull City Hall. Additionally, a firework display is anticipated, provided weather conditions are suitable. A park and ride service will be available, connecting Priory Park, located in Henry Boot Way, with the city centre. Buses are slated to depart every 20 minutes from 18:20 to 21:00. Parking will incur no charge, and “a discounted £1 return fare when purchased at the site” will be offered, according to the council. This event marks the initial entry on Hull’s festive schedule. Throughout the city centre, Christmas markets are planned for every weekend, running from 23 November through 21 December. The Lord Mayor’s yearly Christmas Tree Festival is scheduled to take place at Hull Minster from 3 December to 21 December.
