The company operating the cross-Solent hovercraft service is examining strategies to reduce expenditures. This initiative stems from a decrease in passenger volumes and “challenging economic conditions”. Hovertravel provides services connecting Southsea and Ryde on the Isle of Wight. It announced that a forthcoming review would examine both its timetable and staffing levels across all departments. The objective is “to identify cost efficiencies to ensure a sustainable future”. The firm, established nearly 60 years ago, reported a “continued decline” in the number of individuals traveling on its craft since the onset of the pandemic. In a released statement, it indicated that “ongoing challenging economic conditions” and measures outlined in the recent budget also contributed to the decision to review its operations. Hovertravel confirmed it is collaborating with the RMT union. Further details are expected to be released following the completion of consultations and reviews.
