A 12-year-old canine, distinguished by its tongue perpetually extended from the side of its mouth, has been officially named Britain’s ugliest dog. Muppet, a Chinese crested dog originating from Peterborough, secured this accolade by surpassing seven other contenders in a competition organized by the photography company Parrot Print. The final round was broadcast live on ITV’s This Morning program. Owner Bev Nicholson described Muppet, who also has several missing teeth, as a “wonky little rescue dog” but affirmed he is “beautiful inside and out.” Matt Dahan, the head judge and founder of the competition, commented that Muppet was “both cute and ugly at the same time.” This marks the second time a dog from the family has received such an honor, following Muppet’s brother, Mugly, who won the world’s ugliest dog title in 2012. In addition to the trophy, Muppet was awarded a pampering session at a luxury doggie spa, which included a mud bath and a subsequent Christmas-themed photoshoot. Ms Nicholson stated: “I know people say there’s no such thing as an ugly dog, but it is just a term of endearment. “There are ugly humans aren’t there? “The difference is Muppet has inner beauty. He’s not just a pink dog with a comb-over.”” She further added: “”Walks often take some time as people want to stop us, especially if he’s riding home in his stroller; we call it his chariot,”” Ms Nicholson continued: “”He loves it in there, he’s warm and at a height where he’s happier. “People often take selfies with him with their tongues sticking out too.”” Reflecting on the win, Ms Nicholson remarked: “”When I was told Muppet had won it gave me the giggles. “I am happy for him; he knows no different and it’s nice that a little wonky rescue dog has ended up with this dubious title.”” Muppet reportedly enjoyed his mud bath, and apart from a minor “naughty poop” incident at the photography studio, he behaved perfectly, resulting in “fabulous” photos. Ms Nicholson concluded: “”All in all it’s been a great experience.”” For news from Peterborough, information is available on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X. Copyright 2024 BBC.
