Lille’s Angel Gomes has reached the England national team through an unconventional route. Once celebrated as a prodigy by supporters of his boyhood club Manchester United, Gomes appeared set for a prominent career at Old Trafford. He first played for the senior team under Jose Mourinho at 16, but departed the club three years later, visibly emotional. Citing insufficient first-team chances, Gomes declined a new contract, stating it was a “difficult” decision to leave in order to “better myself as a player and person”. In 2020, he signed with Lille, subsequently being loaned out for a season to Portuguese club Boavista before rejoining the French team. This transition enabled him to develop his skills without significant public scrutiny, yet he remained a player of interest for England. Gomes was a member of the Under-17s World Cup-winning squad in 2017 and also featured in the successful 2023 Under-21s European Championship team, managed by Lee Carsley. Following Carsley’s appointment as interim manager of the senior squad, six players from that Under-21s team, including Gomes, were called up for the Uefa Nations League victories against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September. At 24 years old, Gomes has accumulated four senior international appearances and aims to continue his development under the incoming manager, Thomas Tuchel. However, questions have been raised about whether his senior call-up should have occurred earlier. French football writer Julien Laurens commented to BBC Sport, “When he was called up by England, we were like ‘have they never watched him play? Why has it taken them so long?'” Laurens added, “We’ve seen for the past three years how good he is. It felt right that he finally got his chance.” Angel Gomes (right) replaced Wayne Rooney to make his Premier League debut for Manchester United against Crystal Palace in May 2017, aged 16 years and 263 days old. Although Gomes’ inclusion in the England squad surprised many, it may have been an expected development. Gomes is currently in his fourth season with Lille’s first-team squad, during which he has participated in both the Champions League and Conference League. Laurens further stated, “He’s one of the best players in Ligue 1, there’s no doubt.” He described Gomes as a player “the fans love; a player that you enjoy watching because he’s just so elegant, so creative, such a great touch.” Laurens concluded, “If you know your football, you know that teams need players like Angel Gomes that make everything click and make everything happen.” The midfielder, who grew up in Salford, was highly regarded during his youth career with both England and Manchester United. Jonathan Panzo, currently on loan at Portuguese Primeira Liga side Rio Ave from Nottingham Forest, shared with BBC Sport his initial impressions of training with Gomes: “Angel was always spoken about highly because he’s quality as a player.” Panzo recalled, “You hear about someone, then you get to see it and you are like ‘they weren’t lying about this player’.” He added, “He is definitely one of the best players I have played with.” Angel Gomes lifting the 2017 Under-17s World Cup trophy after England’s 5-2 win over Spain. Gomes’ most significant achievement in youth football occurred in 2017 when England secured the Under-17s World Cup in India. The squad, managed by Leicester City boss Steve Cooper, featured notable players such as Manchester City’s Phil Foden, Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher, Chelsea’s Jadon Sancho, and Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. Joel Latibeaudiere, England’s captain in India and now a player for Coventry City, told BBC Sport, “It was so special.” He described Gomes’ on-field contributions: “On the pitch, he creates goals [and] chances.” Latibeaudiere also noted Gomes’ off-field impact, stating, “Also, I think he has a massive effect off the pitch in terms of keeping the camp bubbly.” He acknowledged the challenge of maintaining morale: “Seven weeks with the same group of people can be tough and keeping that camaraderie going can be tough.” Panzo, also a World Cup winner in India, added, “He is down to earth. He gets his head down, works hard, is humble. That’s what I love about him, he never changes.” Prior to his success in India, Gomes had already debuted in the Premier League, becoming United’s youngest player since Duncan Edwards in 1953. He subsequently made 10 first-team appearances for United before his release at the conclusion of the 2019-20 season, following an inability to reach an agreement on a new contract. Nineteen of Angel Gomes’ appearances for Lille have been in the Champions League and Conference League. Following his departure from United, Gomes signed a five-year contract with Lille and was promptly sent on a season-long loan to Boavista in Portugal. During this period, he participated in 30 of Boavista’s 34 league matches, starting 29 of them. Laurens elaborated, “What French clubs are very good at, especially clubs like Lille who are maybe not the top, [is] keeping tabs on really good young talents around Europe.” He continued, “If you faced an Angel Gomes in youth football and you are impressed, he stays in your scouting data. If it doesn’t work out at Manchester United or somewhere else, then you know exactly what his qualities are and the talent he has.” Laurens concluded by recalling, “I remember when they signed him, they really could not believe that they were able to.” Since rejoining Lille, Gomes has become a consistent presence in the team, accumulating 126 appearances. Angel Gomes (right) provided a superb assist for Jack Grealish (left) during England’s win over Finland in October. While at United, Gomes primarily played as an attacking midfielder. Currently, he is capable of performing in various central midfield positions. Laurens explained, “His technical ability really is great.” He added, “He’s got amazing vision, he sees the game before everybody else.” Laurens suggested that this player profile is uncommon in England, and the number 10 role “is maybe where you get the most out of him because he’s so creative playing behind the striker, he will shine.” Panzo described Gomes as “like a magician,” noting, “He’s a small player, but his IQ is so smart and he just knows how to get around the pitch.” Latibeaudiere further commented on Gomes’ distinctiveness: “The thing that makes [Gomes] stand out the most is his build and how he can dominate a role in which a lot of people think you need a big stature.” He also highlighted Gomes’ development: “What he’s really improved on is almost controlling the game. He’s [now playing] in a deeper role so his understanding of the game has seemed to improve a lot because [in] that role, you are the one that dictates play [and] the tempo.” Angel Gomes and Declan Rice during Gomes’ full debut for England at Wembley against Finland in September. Gomes’ emergence coincides with a new phase for England’s national team. The recent Nations League matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland marked the final games under Carsley before Tuchel assumes management. This season is also significant for Gomes regarding his club future. His contract is due to conclude next summer, and Lille might face difficulties in keeping him, given his now recognized talent. He has been associated with a potential transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in January, and even a return to Manchester United. Laurens stated, “Ideally Lille would want him to extend and let him go in the summer for a bit of money.” However, he added, “I doubt that he will sign an extension.” The question remains regarding Gomes’ ultimate potential. Latibeaudiere commented, “He can go as high as he wants.” He praised Gomes’ career choices, saying, “He made a great decision to go to Portugal when he did and get minutes under his belt. Making the move to France [was] another great decision.” Latibeaudiere concluded, “I’m so happy to see him step up onto the international stage as well.” Post navigation Arsenal’s Title Aspirations Persist Amidst Heightened Scrutiny of Rivals Three Premier League Clubs Reportedly Interested in Miguel Almiron
