An alert has been issued to schools and businesses, advising heightened vigilance following multiple instances of counterfeit currency being circulated. Gloucestershire Police are currently investigating an incident in Cheltenham where four fraudulent £20 notes were passed at a school’s fireworks display. Additionally, at a distinct school gathering in Churchdown, Gloucester, an estimated £300 in counterfeit £20 notes was reportedly tendered as legitimate payment. PC Johnson, from the crime standards bureau, stated, “We are encouraging schools, shops, supermarkets, garages and businesses in general to be vigilant when given notes as a form of payment.” He further advised, “To check the quality of a note, you can scratch them with a pen lid or sharp nail as the ink can come off on counterfeit notes.” Individuals possessing relevant information or suspecting they have received counterfeit currency are encouraged to submit details via an online form available on the Gloucestershire Police website.
