The market town of March in Cambridgeshire, which garnered international attention last year for its distinctive leaning Christmas tree, has once again received a similarly asymmetrical tree for the current festive season. March Town Council reported receiving numerous requests to procure a tree resembling last year’s “banana”-shaped one, leading them to specifically ask their suppliers for such a specimen. According to Sarah Lemmon, the council’s clerk, the supplier had indicated that they could not guarantee fulfilling this specific request. Nevertheless, enthusiasts of unconventional Christmas trees were delighted when this year’s leaning tree was revealed on Broad Street, which recently underwent pedestrianisation. Emily Parkes, 29, commented, “I loved it last year. It was very ‘March’, so quirky.” She added, “I hope it is now a tradition. I want to try to get a slice of the old one. It’s a piece of history now.” Paul Hicks, a member of Fenland District Council, expressed his view that having another leaning tree was “absolutely brilliant.” He stated, “It put March on the map last year. We had tourists, [and] shops made T-shirts and greetings cards celebrating the leaning tree.” Hicks further remarked, “It boosted the local economy and I’m chuffed to see we have another one.” Daniel Fortuna, a tree specialist based in March, has overseen the installation of the town’s Christmas trees for the past two years. Fortuna observed, “It was unusual for me to have around 20 people watching the operation today. Last year, there were only two.” He confirmed, “The council requested a wonky tree, and it definitely has got a lean.”
