Train travelers throughout northern England experienced considerable interruptions as rail services were unable to operate to or from Manchester Piccadilly station. National Rail reported that operations were impacted for the majority of Saturday due to an individual trespassing on the railway line within the Manchester vicinity. The railway lines became operational again around 20:00 GMT; however, numerous services still faced cancellations because of congestion, and Northern stated on its website that the disruptions were anticipated to persist until the day’s conclusion. The company also confirmed that the British Transport Police (BTP) had apprehended the trespasser. “Northern, Network Rail and all other affected train operators are currently in the process of moving stranded trains that have been impacted by this incident,” the statement continued. “Once this has taken place we will work to recover the timetable.” A spokesperson for the BTP indicated that officers responded to a call concerning “a person in a precarious position” on the line close to Levenshulme station at approximately 14:00. “Officers attended alongside Greater Manchester Police, paramedics and fire and rescue, and a person was arrested in connection [with the incident].” The impacted services extended across various regions in the North West, in addition to routes between Carlisle and Newcastle, and sections of Teesside and Yorkshire. National Rail reported that other railway operators experiencing effects included Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Northern, TransPennine Express, and Transport for Wales. A Northern representative stated: “All other services in the North West will be at risk of cancellation and disruption due to the severe impact caused by this incident.” “Customers with tickets to travel on Northern services can travel on board Manchester Metrolink Tram Services, TransPennine Express, East Midlands Railway, Transport for Wales & Cross Country services via any reasonable route until the end of the day.” “This will be the quickest route to/from Manchester City Centre – Manchester Airport.” Post navigation Mountain Road Closure Postponed Due to Adverse Weather Corfe Castle’s King’s Tower Viewpoint Reopened After 378 Years
