The director of a soup kitchen, which had been facing financial difficulties, reported being “overwhelmed” by the public’s response to its Christmas appeal. Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen aimed to raise £10,000 to provide Christmas dinner and gifts for the city’s homeless population, a goal it achieved within four days. The charity now hopes the final amount will surpass £20,000. Andrea Bell, the CEO and founder, expressed her gratitude, stating: “It’s just been so lovely this Christmas, I am so grateful to the people of Sunderland.” Founded in 2019 to address hunger and poverty in the city, the charity currently feeds 100 individuals four times weekly and anticipates serving approximately 120 people on Christmas Day. Its monthly operating costs are estimated at £11,000. Miss Bell recalled a challenging period about a year ago, noting, “About a year ago it got to the point when I was quite panicky because donations had just dried up.” To secure new income sources, the charity has taken over the lease of a building adjacent to its kitchen, with plans to rent out the space and sell vintage clothing. Reflecting on their initial expectations for the appeal, Miss Bell commented: “Given we’ve really struggled for donations recently, we thought we’d be lucky if we got anywhere near our target for our Christmas Appeal.” She added, “When it went over £10,000 in just four days, all of us were just overwhelmed.” Among the contributions was a £2,000 donation from Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, the owner of Sunderland football club. Miss Bell remarked on the positive atmosphere, stating: “The club’s doing well, the city’s buzzing and there’s a little bit more to come in, so we have way more than we ever expected.” She confirmed that sufficient funds are now secured for Christmas, with any additional money to be used to support people throughout 2025, as “we do this work week in, week out.”
