Calvin Diakite, Chelsea’s 15-year-old left-sided defender, has become a consistent presence in the under-18s squad this season, competing in a higher age category than his own. The England youth international, who also qualifies for Ivory Coast due to his parents, is anticipated to sign his initial professional contract in west London when he turns 17, an event scheduled for April 2026. Fiona Armfield, a club scout, first identified Diakite at the age of 10 while he was playing for Dynamo in Catford, and he subsequently opted to join Chelsea instead of their strong rivals, Tottenham. Initially, the Lewisham-based player operated as a central midfielder, aiming to replicate his idol Yaya Toure. However, he was later transitioned into a defensive role within Chelsea’s academy. Currently, Antonio Rudiger, a former Chelsea player now with Real Madrid, serves as the primary role model he admires. Possessing strong ball skills, speed, and outstanding one-on-one defensive capabilities, Diakite has seamlessly integrated into the under-18s. He also received guidance from former Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek prior to Loftus-Cheek’s transfer to AC Milan last summer. Diakite’s passion for football developed through his father, who brought him to Premier League games involving Arsenal, Crystal Palace, and Watford following their move to the United Kingdom. With Diakite as part of the squad, Chelsea achieved success, securing several trophies with him in the under-16s last season. Additional accomplishments are anticipated for him within the highly regarded Cobham-based academy. This season, Enzo Maresca has provided debuts to young players Tyrique George and Sam Rak-Sakyi. Furthermore, 17-year-old Shim Mheuka was named to the bench for a Conference League match only days after signing his initial professional contract.
