A conservation zone situated in Nottingham has been delisted from the most recent heritage at risk register. Historic England maintains this register to provide an overview of the condition of the nation’s historic structures and sites. According to the organization, the canal area in Nottingham, along with its wharves and the adjacent Carrington Street zone, has undergone “major improvements.” Conversely, The Old Ship Inn in Worksop, a Grade-II* listed structure from the late 16th Century, has been placed on the register after remaining vacant for multiple years. The Canal Conservation Area, located immediately south of the city centre and encompassing the city’s railway station, comprises various industrial, commercial, and residential edifices from the 19th and 20th centuries. Historic England attributed the removal from the list to renovations and enhancements made to historical buildings, such as shopfronts, and initiatives aimed at improving the amenity of public areas. Hilary Silvester, executive vice president of the Nottingham Civic Society, commented: “I’m delighted to hear this.” She added: “It’s an important area, a gateway to the city, but it has suffered from being slightly away from the centre itself.” Silvester further stated: “A lot of hard work has gone into improving the streets and pathways, so it is good to see it has paid off.” The Old Ship Inn’s inclusion on the list stems from its requirement for urgent structural timber frame repairs. Historic England indicated it is exploring methods to secure the edifice, though there remains “uncertainty about the time frame for the repairs.” Louise Brennan, Historic England’s regional director for the Midlands, remarked: “Heritage is so important to the East Midlands. “From our historic cities and towns, to treasured parish churches, windmills, and archaeological monuments, the heritage and character of these places plays a vital role in our society and boosts the regional economy.”
