Individuals with complex disabilities and mobility requirements now have access to a newly opened “more inclusive” toilet facility in a south Somerset town. The Quedam Centre in Yeovil has officially inaugurated a Changing Places facility, constructed to a national standard. This new amenity features an adult-sized changing bed, a hoist, and adequate space for carers, with its funding provided by a government initiative. Somerset Council stated that the facility offers a secure, hygienic, and comprehensively equipped environment, aiming to ensure “dignity” and “comfort” for all who use it. The design specifically caters to the needs of individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities, in addition to other disabilities that significantly restrict mobility. Its development was financed by the central government’s Changing Places Toilets Fund. Councillor Federica Smith Roberts, the lead member for equalities and diversity, commented: “The new Quedam Changing Places facility marks a significant step forward in making Yeovil a more inclusive and accessible town for everyone. We are grateful for the support from the central government’s Changing Places Toilets Fund and look forward to seeing the positive impact this facility will have on visitors to the shopping centre.” James Tovey, manager of the Quedam, further remarked: “We are thrilled to see the completion of the Changing Places facility at the Quedam Shopping Centre. This project underscores our commitment to inclusivity and providing essential amenities for all members of our community.”
