Joel Cooper scored the decisive goal, propelling Linfield to an 11-point advantage at the top of the league standings following a 1-0 victory over their closest competitors, Dungannon Swifts. Cooper, who had been linked with a transfer to Coleraine before the match, netted the second-half winner at Stangmore Park. Linfield not only holds an 11-point lead over second-placed Dungannon but also possesses a game in hand against Rodney McAree’s squad, which saw goalkeeper Declan Dunne receive a red card late in the game. In other league results, Glenavon moved six points clear of bottom-placed Loughgall with a 3-1 comeback win against Crusaders. Philip Lowry initially put “the Crues” ahead, but Michael O’Connor equalized at Mourneview Park. Peter Campbell then gave “the Lurgan Blues” the lead, before an own goal by Jordan Forsythe secured manager Paddy McLaughlin’s first league victory. Ballymena United’s BetMcLean Cup quarter-final match against Glentoran was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at the Showgrounds. Following a subdued opening 20 minutes at Stangmore Park, James Knowles nearly broke the deadlock with a free-kick that curled just over the crossbar. Linfield’s goalkeeper, David Walsh, was then called upon to make a low save, denying Leo Alves. In the 34th minute, the visiting team appealed for a penalty after Gael Bigirimana brought down Matthew Fitzpatrick just inside the box, but referee Declan Hassan dismissed their claims. Shortly after, Dunne skillfully parried Cooper’s long-range shot, and Jamie Mulgrew was unable to convert the rebound. The stalemate was broken in the 53rd minute when Cooper advanced and unleashed a low shot from the edge of the penalty area, finding the bottom left-hand corner of the net. Linfield almost doubled their lead quickly when Mulgrew’s cross was not cleared by the Dungannon defense, allowing Kirk Millar time to control the ball and send a powerful strike towards goal, which Dunne impressively saved. At the other end, Knowles delivered a well-timed cross into the box for McGovern, whose resulting point-blank header was directed straight at Linfield’s stopper, Walsh. Knowles continued to be central to Dungannon’s attacks, and the midfielder’s free-kick crashed off the left-hand post as McAree’s side persisted in their push for an equalizer. The home side’s goalkeeper, Dunne, was subsequently shown a straight red card in the 87th minute for handling the ball outside the box while attempting to thwart Fitzpatrick’s chance when he was through on goal. At Mourneview Park, Crusaders took the lead in the 17th minute when Lowry met Jordan Forsythe’s long throw with a deft header, guiding the ball into the far corner for his second league goal of the campaign. Declan Caddell’s side nearly doubled their advantage nine minutes later as Jimmy Callacher’s audacious effort from just inside the Glenavon half rattled the crossbar after stand-in keeper Mark Byrne’s crucial intervention. However, the hosts found their rhythm and equalized on the stroke of half-time when O’Connor rose highest to nod home Peter Campbell’s pinpoint corner, which sent the teams level into the break. Glenavon’s transformation continued after the interval, and they completed the turnaround in the 62nd minute with a devastating counter-attack. Davy McDaid’s excellent vision set 16-year-old Chris Atherton free, who in turn found the marauding Campbell at the back post for a clinical finish. McDaid’s influence grew further as the home side extended their lead 10 minutes later. The forward’s deflected shot ricocheted off Jordan Forsythe for an unfortunate own goal. McLaughlin’s men continued to press forward, and the impressive Atherton nearly added a fourth late on as his effort struck the woodwork.
