Over 500 individuals are participating in the Rubik’s UK Championship, held in Coventry. The event, taking place at the CBS Arena, encompasses 15 distinct categories, with organizers assuring spectators a weekend of “twists and turns.” This championship coincides with the 50th anniversary of Ernő Rubik’s invention of the original 3×3 cube. Some categories require competitors to solve the puzzle while blindfolded or using only one hand. The roster of competitors includes the reigning UK champion, Nicholas, 17, who stated: “I have been practising hard because everyone keeps getting quicker.” He will face off against James, 15, the 2022 champion, who recently established a new UK record for speedcubing with an average cube-solving time of under six seconds. The championship, hosted in Coventry for the third consecutive year, is scheduled to run until Sunday. Categories range from the standard Rubik’s Cube to other sizes, from 2×2 up to 7×7. Additionally, challenges involving “twisty puzzles” such as the Pyraminx, Megaminx, Clock, Skewb, and Square-1 are included. All winners will receive official recognition from the World Cube Association, the global governing body. While representatives from 32 countries are present, only competitors representing the UK are eligible to win the champion title at the Coventry gathering. This event follows the European championship, which was held in Spain in July. Follow BBC Coventry & Warwickshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
