Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Amy Dowden was transported to a hospital after collapsing backstage during Saturday night’s main show. Emergency medical services were summoned to Elstree Studios in Borehamwood on Saturday when the dancer reported feeling unwell. Dowden rejoined the Strictly line-up in 2024, having been absent from the previous series following a diagnosis of breast cancer. A spokesperson for the dancer stated that the ambulance “was called as a precaution” and that she was now “feeling much better.” Dowden did not participate in Sunday evening’s results show because she had been taken to the hospital before its filming. An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called just after 21:00 BST on Saturday to attend a medical emergency at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood.” They added: “An ambulance was sent to the scene. One patient, an adult female, was transported to Barnet Hospital for further care.” In a statement, Dowden’s spokesperson said: “Amy was feeling unwell and so an ambulance was called as a precaution.” The statement continued: “She is feeling much better and would like to thank the Strictly family for their love and concern.” The spokesperson further requested: “We request Amy’s privacy in matters of health is kindly respected.” A BBC spokesperson commented: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, Amy Dowden was unable to be in tonight’s results show.” Confirmation regarding her potential absence from future rehearsals or recordings has not yet been provided. Amy received an initial diagnosis of stage three breast cancer at the age of 32 in May 2023, after discovering a lump in her breast the day prior to her honeymoon. The dancer, now 34, received another diagnosis later in the same year. She was readmitted to the hospital in August 2024 for additional examinations, following doctors’ concerns about breast abnormalities identified during a check-up. She discussed her experience with breast cancer in a BBC documentary titled Strictly Amy: Cancer and Me, which aired in September. When announcing the documentary, she stated: “It was an exciting new chapter in my life, but finding a lump on my breast changed my life.” Dowden also lives with Crohn’s disease, a chronic condition characterized by inflammation in parts of the digestive system, and has previously addressed its impact on her well-being. Although she missed the previous year’s series due to her illness, Dowden participated in the group dance during the December final. For the current season, she has been partnered with JLS singer JB Gill. Following her initial live performance, she expressed being “so happy I could burst.” The pair achieved the highest score on the judges’ leaderboard, receiving 31 points for their waltz performed to Leo Sayer’s “When I Need You.” Copyright 2024 BBC.
