Health officials indicate that an annual investment of £135 million over a five-year period is necessary to eliminate hospital waiting lists. Northern Ireland registered its highest recorded number of individuals awaiting an initial appointment with a hospital consultant in November. Currently, over half a million individuals are awaiting consultations with specialists. The Department of Health (DoH) projects that approximately £675 million will be required over five years to address the backlog of 506,600 people awaiting appointments. Dr. Tomas Adell, a Department official, informed Stormont’s health committee that the “backlog is huge and the numbers are completely unacceptable.” He noted that the problem of waiting lists has deteriorated since 2010 and described it as “impossible” to resolve rapidly. “We estimate that it can be done in five years if we have huge investment… but this is not an easy fix,” said Dr Adell. He further explained that efficiency savings alone would not be sufficient to address the waiting list challenge. “To fix the backlog, we estimate that it would cost up to £135m a year for up to five years.” He concluded, “These are very significant investment requirements in a very challenging context – but that is the reality.” Concurrently, the Public Health Agency (PHA) and the Southern Health Trust are scheduled to appear before the scrutiny committee to account for the failures in cervical cancer screening that affected numerous women. A comprehensive review of cervical screening practices at the Southern Health Trust identified eight women who subsequently developed cancer after their smear tests were incorrectly interpreted by screeners. Additionally, 11 other women’s slides, upon review, revealed pre-cancerous cellular changes, necessitating treatment. When their smears were re-examined, all these women were found to have either pre-cancerous changes in their cervix or were diagnosed with another significant gynaecological condition. The Southern Health Trust has issued an apology to all individuals impacted. Members of the health committee expressed their desire to receive explanations from both the trust and the PHA regarding the extended duration of these issues.
