An emerging writer described the experience of her novel achieving bestseller status, following its widespread attention on social media, as “a bit overwhelming” yet “very exciting”. Vicky Ball, a former school teacher from Suffolk residing in Colchester, Essex, shared a post on X expressing pride after selling two of her books at an event held in Chelmsford. Subsequently, this post has accumulated over 24 million views, been reposted 31,000 times, and attracted more than 740,000 likes from individuals worldwide. This increased visibility led to one of the 48-year-old’s literary works, titled Powerless, rapidly ascending Amazon’s chart for teen and young adult fiction, which came as a considerable surprise to her. Mrs. Ball, employed at the University of Essex, stated: “I sold two books, which I was really happy about, because sometimes I’ve had book events where I don’t sell any.” She continued: “So, I just posted it on X and thought nothing of it and left it. But then a few days later I woke up and checked my phone and it was going a bit crazy.” Mrs. Ball further remarked: “I was completely surprised really and it was all a bit overwhelming – I was just amazed and couldn’t believe it.” Mrs. Ball, who has consistently found pleasure in writing and “loves creating new stories,” completed her initial novel during the lockdown period, subsequently securing a modest publishing agreement. Powerless is described as a thriller containing “lots of twists” concerning a missing girl’s return home, whereas her second publication, Abandoned, focuses on an alcoholic mother concealing a dark secret. Following her emergence as a viral phenomenon, her inaugural literary work has been acquired by readers globally, with sales recorded in countries such as America, Belgium, and Columbia. She also commented: “It’s been so lovely reading all the messages of support and it’s been generally very positive, the majority of the people have been really happy for me.” Mrs. Ball further stated: “Social media can be a really positive place, especially on X because there’s a big writing community and we are very supportive of each other.” She concluded: “I am quite happy at the moment doing a master’s in creative writing and working at the university, but I have some ideas for some other books in the pipeline.” For updates on Suffolk news, access BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
