Students enrolled in the illustration program at the University of Northampton are organizing an exhibition within the town, aiming to demonstrate the significance of their course. This particular illustration program is among those identified for potential discontinuation as part of cost-saving measures. The exhibition, hosted at The Lab in Northampton, is set to display a publication comprising sci-fi fantasy illustrations, collaboratively produced by the students. Daniel Jupp, a second-year illustration student, commented that the potential closure or consolidation of courses would lead to an “unsure and overwhelming environment.” The university communicated to students via a letter its intention to conduct a consultation regarding courses in 2025, with the stated goal to “maximise the opportunity for high graduate outcomes.” A university spokesperson added that institutions nationwide in the UK are confronting “pressing challenges,” and that the university would assist students in “explore alternative options” should elements of their courses be eliminated. When questioned about whether the exhibition aimed to demonstrate the value of their course, Mr. Jupp affirmed, “yes, that is what we want to do.” The students’ collective work includes a publication themed around a “sci-fi, fantasy world,” characterized by a “dystopian” feel. Student Annie Nguyen described the project as the “end results of a two month collaboration,” noting that students assumed “a number of different roles.” The collaborative output from six illustration students will be showcased at The Lab in Northampton this Saturday, from 12:30 to 16:30 BST.
