England centre Emily Scarratt, who has earned 111 caps for her country, has stated that the arrival of new players, including international star Ilona Maher, is expected to “push” the profile of Rugby Union. American Olympic bronze medallist Ilona Maher has signed with Bristol Bears for the remainder of the Premiership Women’s Rugby season. The 28-year-old athlete holds the distinction of being the most followed Rugby Union player globally on social media, boasting 4.5 million followers on Instagram and 3.2 million on TikTok. “Additions like Ilona Maher prove how good this PWR league is,” commented Scarratt, who plays for Loughborough Lightning. Scarratt’s team is scheduled to play against the Bears on 1 February, potentially pitting her against Maher. Following Maher’s signing, the derby match between Bristol and Gloucester has been relocated to a larger stadium to accommodate the increased ticket demand. Scarratt explained, “I think what we have seen most recently and not just in rugby, is people follow people.” “With the rush of social media they don’t necessarily tune into a team or country.” “So I think she is going to do amazing things just by being here.” “She already has done by bringing people from all over the world to our league.” Maher was instrumental in helping the USA secure their first Olympic medal in rugby, achieving a dramatic late victory over Australia in Paris. Maher is primarily recognized for her career in sevens rugby and is making a comeback to XVs after a three-year hiatus. This versatile back, capable of playing either at centre or on the wing, has secured a three-month contract commencing in January. Scarratt further stated, “I hope she has a really good experience and doesn’t feel the weight on her shoulders too much.” The 34-year-old athlete also commended the pathway available for university students entering women’s rugby. “Them and internationals are continuing to push the game on and the clubs within it are in a good place. Ilona will only help keep pushing that.”
