A 77-year-old squash enthusiast expressed his “absolute amazement” upon receiving a national unsung hero award. Martin Braybrook has dedicated over four decades of volunteer service to the Cromer squash club in Norfolk, notably establishing its inaugural team in the early 1980s. Mr. Braybrook, who assumed the role of club treasurer in 2002, stated that he “had no idea” about his nomination for the accolade. His significant contributions to the club led to him being named the Unsung Hero at the England Squash Awards 2024. After relocating to Cromer in 1980, Mr. Braybrook recounted that the squash courts were instrumental in preserving the club, as “tennis was struggling.” Subsequently, the club developed three men’s and two ladies’ teams competing in the Norfolk leagues. Approximately two decades ago, while at his peak playing for Norfolk’s over 55s team, he conceded that “he wasn’t the world’s best player.” He added, “I suppose my strength has always been administration rather than playing.” Mr. Braybrook, who ceased playing following a hip replacement, humbly commented: “It has been very much a team effort over the years.” He further stated, “I could name umpteen people who have volunteered – I obviously haven’t done it all for 40 years.” England Squash, in its announcement of his award, characterized Mr. Braybrook as a “local legend.”
