An initiative has commenced to increase understanding regarding the prejudice linked to HIV. The personal accounts of six individuals are featured on digital billboards situated at bus stops across Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire, leading up to World AIDS Day on December 1. Brigstowe, a charity based in Bristol dedicated to assisting individuals with HIV, initiated this campaign with the goals of promoting HIV testing and emphasizing that people managing the condition can maintain healthy and typical lifestyles. An anonymous individual living with HIV expressed, “Seeing the billboards, with a positive message that slaps stigma into oblivion, makes my heart soar and beat with hope.” The displays feature the phrase “Undetectable=Untransmittable,” serving as a reminder to the public that individuals undergoing treatment for HIV are unable to transmit the virus. Despite progress in medical treatment, Brigstowe states that public understanding and views of the condition continue to be “outdated.” Research conducted by the Terrence Higgins Trust among people with HIV revealed that a significant number encountered stigma or discrimination because of their condition. Furthermore, the charity reported that individuals living with HIV were twice as prone to experiencing depression. Aled Osborne, Brigstowe’s community engagement manager, commented: “People living with HIV on treatment cannot pass on the virus. Not only is this important for public health in terms of significantly reducing onward transmission, but it means so much for the community of people living with HIV and has changed their lives.” Mr. Osborne stated that it was “disappointing and worrying” that the organization continued to receive numerous accounts of stigma related to HIV. Mr. Osborne further added, “It’s more important than ever to ensure all people living with HIV can not only live but thrive in all areas of society.” The digital billboards are scheduled to remain visible until December 1.
