A man has confessed to being responsible for the death of one pedestrian and inflicting serious injuries upon another after striking them with his vehicle in Leicester. Anthony Haynes, aged 66, was transported to a hospital subsequent to being struck by a blue Volkswagen Jetta on Oronsay Road, Beaumont Leys, shortly after 10:30 BST on 12 September. He succumbed to his injuries 11 days later. Leicestershire Police stated that his carer, Rachael Newton, 56, sustained life-altering injuries and remains in recovery. Ryan Skelton, 23, entered a guilty plea to charges of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Leicester Crown Court on Friday. Skelton, who resides on Granville Road in Wigston, is scheduled for sentencing at the aforementioned court on 9 January. Detective Constable Madeleine Hayes commented: “While no sentence will bring Mr Haynes back, I hope that his family and friends will take some relief from the fact they will not have to sit through a trial and get the justice that they deserve.” BBC Leicester can be followed on Facebook, X, or Instagram for further updates.
