An individual perished following the capsizing of a migrant vessel during an attempted crossing of the English Channel on Sunday morning. According to French authorities, the man, identified as an Indian national approximately 40 years of age, experienced a cardiac arrest and could not be resuscitated by emergency personnel. French authorities reported that the vessel deflated soon after departing the coast at Tardinghen, close to Calais, at 05:30 local time (04:30 GMT), leading those on board to swim back to shore. This incident marks the third fatal sinking within the last 10 days, occurring in what is already recognized as the deadliest year on record for journeys across the Channel. Previously, on Wednesday, three individuals lost their lives when a small boat carrying dozens of migrants, destined for the UK, sank in the Channel. A subsequent rescue effort successfully retrieved 45 people from the French coast. Before that event, a four-month-old infant perished when an overloaded migrant vessel capsized on the evening of 18 October. Rescuers managed to save 65 other individuals. The French coastguard has reported that over 100 individuals have been rescued from migrant boats in difficulty since Thursday. Additionally, French authorities confirmed that multiple attempts to traverse the Channel were intercepted by police and gendarmes on Sunday morning, including at locations such as Equihen-Plage, Calais, and Sangatte. Officials attribute a recent rise in attempted crossings to advantageous weather conditions. Fresh data released by the UK government indicates that the count of migrants arriving in small boats this year has already exceeded the total for 2023. By Friday, 29,578 arrivals had been recorded in 2024, in contrast to 29,437 throughout the entirety of 2023. The previous year’s total was below the peak of 45,774 arrivals registered in 2022. The Home Office has committed to “stop at nothing” in its efforts to dismantle criminal organizations involved in people-smuggling that facilitate small boat crossings. A spokesperson for the department stated: “Our new border security command will strengthen our global partnerships and enhance our efforts to investigate, arrest, and prosecute these evil criminals.” A BBC undercover investigation, released on Friday, revealed a group of people-smugglers operating in Germany who were offering a Channel crossing “package” priced at €15,000 (£12,500). This package comprised an inflatable dinghy equipped with an outboard motor and 60 life jackets. The smugglers indicated that they kept the boats in various clandestine warehouses to conceal them from German police. Data compiled by the United Nations indicates that the current year has already proven to be the most fatal for migrant crossings in the Channel. With this most recent sinking, the death toll for individuals attempting the journey in 2024 now stands at a minimum of 57. Enver Solomon, the chief executive of the charity Refugee Council, emphasized that it was “vital” for the government to do “everything possible” to guarantee that refugees are no longer compelled to risk their lives. He further stated: “We must not forget that those making the perilous journeys across the Channel are desperate men, women and children fleeing persecution and war, in countries such as Afghanistan and Sudan, simply seeking safety and a future free from fear.” Copyright 2024 BBC.
