A 10-year strategy for the management of its public toilet facilities has been put forward by Highland Council. The local authority currently oversees 74 restrooms and provides financial support to 53 additional entities, such as community organizations, to ensure public access to these amenities. While the council views these provisions as crucial for both local residents and tourists visiting the region, it also highlighted vandalism as a significant obstacle to the service. Within this strategy are proposals for constructing new facilities and renovating existing ones. Specific sites identified for upgrades include Lairg, whereas new toilet facilities have already been established in Achmelvich, a well-known tourist destination on the north Highland coast, and Gairloch. Incidents of vandalism have led to prolonged closures of toilets in areas such as Fort William and Nairn. The plan is scheduled for approval consideration by councillors at an upcoming meeting next week. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
