Scotland’s Ewen Lumsden and England’s 17-year-old Mia Wainwright emerged as champions at the inaugural Tennis Scotland Open Tour finals, an event that was broadcast live by BBC Scotland. Lumsden, who holds a world ranking of 601, achieved a double victory. He triumphed over Hamish Stewart (ranked 520) in the final with scores of 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, thereby reversing his defeat from the previous year. This followed his earlier success in the men’s doubles title, which he secured alongside former world number 44 Jonny O’Mara. Earlier in the semi-finals, the top-seeded reigning champion Stewart had overcome English third seed Liam Hignett, also 25 years old, with a 6-3, 6-4 win. In the other semi-final, second seed Lumsden decisively defeated fellow 24-year-old James MacKinlay 6-0, 6-1. In the women’s final, Nottingham’s Wainwright ultimately overpowered the top-seeded Emma Wilson, a 27-year-old from Newcastle, securing the win with scores of 7-6, 6-2. Both finalists had advanced to the championship match after achieving straightforward victories in their respective semi-final encounters. Wainwright, ranked 595th in the world junior rankings, defeated fellow 17-year-old Aimee Knowles, who is also from Northumberland, 6-2, 6-0. Wilson, ranked 983 on the senior tour and having entered the tournament as a wild card, secured a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Northumberland’s 16-year-old Teodora Prisadnikova, who had been the runner-up in the previous year’s event. Sandi Toksvig will be joined by Gyles Brandreth, Lulu, Emmanuel Sonubi, and Alan Davies. Audiences can grab the microphone for songs by Queen, Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, Katy Perry, and more. Ben Fogle and Kate Humble are returning for the festivities at Longleat Safari Park. Discussions will range from microplastics in our air, soil, and waterways, to the extent of food waste at this time of year. © 2024 BBC. The BBC is not responsible for the content of external sites.
