The Northumberland Line, which had been out of service for over six decades, has officially recommenced operations after experiencing delays. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander and North East Mayor Kim McGuinness participated in a special inaugural journey to commemorate the reinstatement of passenger rail services on the route. Upon its arrival in Ashington, concluding its trip from Newcastle, the train was met by local schoolchildren forming a welcoming party, adorned with bunting. Scheduled passenger services are set to commence on the line starting Sunday, following a £298 million initiative to restore its functionality. The undertaking encountered multiple postponements and escalating expenses, as the route was originally slated for a summer opening. Stations located at Northumberland Park, Newsham, Bedlington, and Blyth Bebside, which were not finished on schedule, are anticipated to become operational throughout the coming year. Northumberland County Council attributed the issues to “weather-related impact to construction.” McGuinness expressed her belief that the route would experience “an awful lot of demand.” She stated, “It links people up with schools, opportunities and jobs.” Glen Sanderson, the Conservative leader of Northumberland County Council, opined that the new line has the potential to stimulate economic growth and regeneration. He remarked, “The line is like a pair of scissors going straight into the area that needs a good rail line and it will bring people with it.” He also indicated a desire for the route to be extended to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea in the future. Dennis Fancett, who chairs the South East Northumberland Rail User Group and has advocated for the reinstatement of passenger services for nearly two decades, was also among the travelers. He commented, “We’re very excited, we’re delighted after such a long campaign to get to the finishing line.” The Northumberland Line was among numerous railway routes discontinued during the Beeching cuts of the 1960s. Northern is scheduled to run services every half-hour from Monday through Saturday, with hourly services during evenings and on weekends, stopping at stations along the route, including Seaton Delaval and Manors.
