The official name for Canada’s inaugural WNBA team has been unveiled as the Toronto Tempo, following over 10,000 name suggestions from the public. In a press release, Teresa Resch, the team’s president, stated, “Tempo is pace. It’s speed. It’s a heartbeat. And it’s what you feel when you step into the streets of this city.” This announcement follows approximately six months after the Women’s National Basketball Association declared its expansion into Canada, establishing the first WNBA team located outside the United States. The 2024 WNBA season achieved its highest regular season viewership in over two decades, largely attributed to rising talents such as Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. The name’s disclosure occurred ahead of schedule, having been inadvertently discovered in a dropdown menu on the league’s official website. The WNBA now comprises 14 professional teams with the inclusion of the Toronto Tempo. The establishment of the Toronto franchise is integral to a broader league expansion initiative, with aspirations to reach a total of 16 teams by 2028. Ms. Resch commented, “As Canada’s WNBA team, I know the Tempo will set our own pace, move at a championship cadence, and inspire people across this country.” The franchise stated that the Tempo’s logo, designed to embody the team’s values, features a basketball with a central “T.” Six sharp lines extend from the ball within the logo, which the press release explained as “representing the five players on the court and the sixth player in the game: the fans,” in addition to symbolizing the city’s six boroughs. The Toronto Tempo is scheduled to commence play at Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum in 2026. Kilmer Sports Ventures, chaired by Larry Tanenbaum, owns and operates the team. Mr. Tanenbaum also holds positions as a minority owner and chairman of Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, an entity that possesses multiple other Toronto sports franchises, such as the Toronto Maple Leafs ice hockey team, the Toronto Raptors men’s basketball team, and the Toronto FC Major League Soccer team. The introduction of the Toronto Tempo is considered a notable event for women’s sports in Canada, especially given that basketball was invented by a Canadian.
