An intricate model of York Minster, constructed from 80,000 matchsticks, has been acquired by a toy shop, with the proceeds directed to a charitable organization. Clive Holmes, 87, from Durham, dedicated two years to fashioning his 6ft (1.8m) long creation. His granddaughter’s relocation to the city for university studies served as the inspiration for this project. However, his wife noted that the model occupied a significant amount of space within their home. His daughter, Sue Todner, stated: “He was going to torch it, so it certainly had to go somewhere and we’re so glad it’s found a new home.” Mr. Holmes has a history of constructing models of various churches and cathedrals, a practice he has maintained for approximately 40 years. To secure a new location for the artwork within the city that originally inspired its creation, his daughter initiated an appeal across social media platforms. “The response was amazing, so we decided to put it up for auction and we were hoping it would go to somewhere near the Minster and luckily it did,” she informed BBC Radio York. The purchase was made by Totally Awesome, a toy shop situated on Colliergate, which intends to display the model in its window. The funds generated from the sale of the model have been contributed to Harbour, a charity dedicated to assisting families in the north-east of England who are impacted by domestic abuse. Danielle Chadwick, the manager, commented: “To selflessly give the money to a charity, I just think it’s magical.”Christmas can be a really difficult time for the families we work with, and with donations like this we can help make it as special as possible.” Mr. Holmes, who previously served as a firefighter, has constructed numerous models throughout the years, including one depicting Durham Cathedral. However, he indicated that this particular creation might be his final one. “It takes a while,” he remarked, further adding: “And him upstairs keeps phoning me, so I’m not sure I’ll ever get around to making another one.” Readers can follow BBC North East on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram.
