Homeowners have voiced bewilderment and distress after individuals wearing balaclavas severed the Christmas lights adorning their residences. Suffolk Police has initiated an investigation following reports of 11 separate incidents where Christmas lights were cut at various properties, with one instance recorded on camera. These acts of vandalism occurred during the night of December 5th to 6th across the communities of Onehouse, Great Finborough, Stanningfield, Battisford, and Combs. Luke McGann, a resident of Great Finborough, whose property was among those targeted, stated he was “gutted”. Regarding his annual Christmas display, he explained, “We normally do it for the kids in the village so when they come from school they enjoy seeing it in the evening time.” He added, “We get a lot of attraction from people coming past to have a look at our display of lights.” Mr. McGann recounted that during strong winds the previous week, he observed his lights had ceased functioning sometime between 20:00 and 21:00 GMT. Upon investigating outdoors, he discovered that the wires had been severed, and his snowfall projector had also been taken. He further commented, “To think that someone can have the audacity to come on to your property, go up to your front door and cut all the wires.” He also remarked, “To think they want to spoil all the fun for those who want to celebrate Christmas.” “It’s a shame that people think they’ve got the right to come out and destroy a bit of fun,” he stated. Concluding, he expressed, “It’s devastating and I just hope they have a conscience or they get found fairly soon by the police.” John Emsden, a resident of Onehouse since 1987, has been decorating his home with Christmas lights for approximately 34 years. He explained, “I put them up mainly for the village really because when people walk or drive through the village it’s a nice Christmas feel for them.” “I have no lights left now. Altogether they’ve cut about 12 lines [of lights]… they just cut them through,” he reported. He conveyed, “I feel terrible really, I didn’t expect anything like this to happen after I’ve been putting them up since roughly 1990.” “This is the first time I’ve ever had anything like this,” he added. Ruth Duchesne, a parish councillor representing Stanningfield, mentioned that decorated trees within the village also had their lights severed. Ms. Duchesne remarked, “I don’t understand why someone would want to do such a thing.” She continued, “The village looks beautiful, it’s part of a celebration and I don’t understand why and who would have the time? It’s pointless.” “All the hard work that goes into funding the lights and putting them together as a community… I don’t know why,” she stated. Ms. Duchesne appealed to those responsible to cease these actions, noting that they had “spoilt” the festive period for “a lot of people.” Video captured by a doorbell camera during one of the occurrences depicted a man wearing a balaclava approaching stealthily before cutting festive lights at a residence. Additional affected residents have reported seeing two men engaged in cutting the lights. Law enforcement officials suspect a connection between these incidents, and investigations are currently in progress. No arrests have been carried out. PC Simon Lant urged anyone possessing information to reach out to the police force. He commented, “Why someone decided to carry out this period of mindless vandalism is not clear but it has brought hurt, as well as a financial cost, to many residents in the area, depriving those living and visiting in these areas of the colour and joy that these lights bring to people, young and old.”
