A seawater pool in Devon has been allocated a £550,000 government grant for essential repairs, aimed at protecting it from damage caused by waves. Shoalstone Seawater Pool, located in Brixham, received these funds from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s Community Ownership Fund, contributing to a larger £750,000 engineering project. The management of the pool indicated that the scope of work will involve the reconstruction of the north west corner and anchoring the base to the underlying rock, following the appearance of cracks caused by waves repeatedly crashing against the structure. Jessica Stock, the pool’s chair, described it as a “time to celebrate” after the funding for the project was secured. The initiative has also benefited from a combined donation of £120,000 from Torbay Council and Brixham Town Council. Ms Stock stated: “For four years we have watched the waves coming over the side at Shoalstone Pool and every wave has made the cracks a little bit bigger.” She further added: “We have won this award because we were able to show that – from Santa Runs to Beer Festivals – the people of Brixham and Torbay have been tireless in their fundraising and support for the pool.”
