A new statue honoring Royal Navy servicemen and women, encompassing both those currently serving and those who have served previously, was revealed in the Cleethorpes Pier Gardens on Saturday morning. The local Royal Navy club successfully gathered funds totaling £13,000 from various businesses and community organizations to facilitate the installation of the artwork. Nigel Smith, a Falklands veteran and a member of the club, stated that the initiative represented a two-year endeavor, expressing that he was “immensely proud”. The sculpture portrays a navy Wren, a sailor, and a marine commando. Mr. Smith, whose service included HMS Antrim, a County Class destroyer, during the 1982 Falklands conflict, conveyed that the memorial held profound personal significance for him. “I’ve been part of something that’s history, and what we’re doing now is going to be in place so that people can remember and talk about it, and I’m proud of that.” He also mentioned that the club was deeply grateful for the extensive public support received, extending thanks to all contributors.
