Rory Smith of The Athletic conveyed on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club that Mohamed Salah could potentially maintain his elite performance for a longer duration than other players, attributing this to periods of reduced playing time earlier in his career. Salah, whose current agreement is set to expire at the conclusion of the season, informed journalists following Sunday’s victory at Southampton that he is “probably more out than in” regarding his future, and has not yet been presented with new terms. Smith stated: “It strikes me that he is making it very clear to the Liverpool fans that he wants to stay and that if he doesn’t end up staying that it’s not really a lack of intent on his part.” He added that Salah’s age would be a factor, noting that Liverpool would be consulting “the vast data set you have of footballers over the past 20, 30 years,” which indicates a decline in performance typically occurs in a player’s mid-30s. Smith suggested the club would be considering “whether is it worth committing £300,000 a week or so to a player who might only have another year at this level.” He then posed the question: “Or maybe he will have another two years at this level? Or another five or six? That’s the gamble Liverpool have to take.” Commenting on Salah’s statements, former Premier League striker Chris Sutton remarked: “It wasn’t one of those where Mo Salah was asked to talk. He actually made an approach and wanted to speak to a couple of press guys to get things off his chest.” Sutton concluded, “So in that respect it says to me that he wants to stay.” Post navigation Hamstring Strain Sidelines Harry Kane ‘for the time being’ Chris Sutton Highlights Martin Odegaard’s Crucial Role for Arsenal’s Ambitions
