John Carver, who serves as an assistant for Scotland, has been named head coach of Lechia Gdansk, a team in Poland’s top football division. He will, however, continue to assist Steve Clarke for Scotland’s Nations League play-off match against Greece in March. The 59-year-old Englishman, who joined Steve Clarke’s coaching staff in August 2020, is scheduled to commence his new duties on 2 December. Nevertheless, the Ekstraklasa club has confirmed his continued involvement with the Scottish national team for their March Nations League play-off against Greece. Carver, previously an interim manager for Newcastle and Leeds United, has signed an agreement with the Gdansk-based club valid until the conclusion of the current season, with an included provision for an extension for an additional year. A statement from Lechia confirmed this arrangement, stating: “As all parties agreed, during the international break in March 2025, Carver will accompany Scotland for their play-off match against Greece.” The Polish club, whose technical director is Kevin Blackwell, a former manager of Leeds and Sheffield United, secured promotion to the top flight during the previous season. Despite this, they currently occupy the second-to-last position in the league standings, having achieved only two victories in 17 matches. Carver’s most recent role as a manager was an eight-month period leading Cypriot club Omonia Nicosia during the 2016-17 season.
