The head of Kent County Council (KCC) undertook a visit to Ukraine, aiming to express solidarity, friendship, and a commitment to cooperation with a specific region within the nation affected by conflict. Roger Gough, KCC’s leader, formalized a pre-arranged memorandum of understanding (MOU) during his presence in the Chernihiv region, accompanied by Conservative councillor Jordan Meade. This action stems from a council resolution passed in July, which aimed to foster and strengthen collaboration between Kent county and the northern Ukrainian region, an area that borders Belarus and Russia. Gough stated: “This collaboration and sharing of knowledge and expertise, from the economy, to education, agriculture and technology, is the start of a commitment to help Ukraine rebuild in peace.” The memorandum of understanding, which seeks to investigate the exchange of knowledge, cultural and educational interactions, and commercial prospects, received signatures from Vyacheslav Chaus, the head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, in addition to Gough and Meade. Gough commented: “We stand with the people of Chernihiv to find a path to a stronger and brighter future.” Gough and Meade, who personally covered the expenses for their journey, also toured a school basement in the village of Yahidne, where they heard accounts from survivors regarding events during the Russian occupation. Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, communicated in a letter to Gough: “The people of Kent have demonstrated remarkable solidarity, from fundraising efforts to warmly welcoming Ukrainians into their homes.” Meade, who has made multiple visits to Ukraine since the Russian invasion to assist in distributing aid contributed by Kent residents and businesses, stated: “I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the people and businesses of Kent, who have donated items ranging from children’s books to medical supplies.
