William Tate expressed that he was “humbled” following his re-election as President of Alderney’s States. Tate, who has served as president since 2019, stated his intention to continue serving the community for as long as they maintain “confidence and trust” in him. In Saturday’s election, Tate competed against Mark Smith, securing 467 votes, which constituted approximately 64% of the total ballots cast. Tate remarked that he would never “underestimate the honour and privilege” associated with representing the community. Tate commented, “To have that sort of support signals to me the last five and a half years I have had this role the public does have confidence in me, and they are happy I am the face of Alderney both here and in the wider world.” He added, “I think we have some significant challenges, and I think we need to address them as a Bailiwick so that we need to work closely with Guernsey because what we need to do is find a way forward for the Bailiwick to create a sustainable environment for the future. Those conversations are very important.” He expressed his desire to be assured that all necessary actions have been taken to “secure” Alderney’s future. When questioned about potential changes to his approach in the role, he responded: “I think if it is not broken, don’t fix it. I just hope people trust me to carry on. I have some ideas which I am going to put forward at a community level. I will continue to serve this community in the community for as long they have confidence and trust in me. It is a unique role. No other crown dependency has a president and for this community, they think the president is a really important role and I agree with them.” Readers can follow BBC Guernsey on X and Facebook, and submit story ideas to channel.islands@bbc.co.uk.
