The Chief Minister has announced the establishment of a new minister “without portfolio” position, intended to assist in supervising government efficiency savings. Tim Crookall MHK assumed this new responsibility following a significant reorganization of the Isle of Man government’s cabinet that occurred last month. Alfred Cannan stated that Mr. Crookall’s role would involve supporting efforts to achieve £10 million in savings and addressing a projected £16.8 million overspend by Manx Care. However, inquiries emerged regarding the scope of this position and the rationale for creating a new post rather than delegating the responsibilities. The cabinet reorganization also included Claire Christian MHK assuming the role of health minister, following Lawrie Hooper’s resignation from that position amidst a disagreement concerning budget reductions aimed at resolving Manx Care’s anticipated deficit. Michelle Haywood MHK was appointed as the new infrastructure minister, while her predecessor, Tim Crookall, transitioned into the newly established ministerial capacity. At the December sitting of Tynwald, Mr. Hooper requested further details about the role and questioned how Chief Minister Cannan had “managed without this support in place” previously. In defense of the decision, the Chief Minister stated that addressing the £16 million health deficit had “required me to devote considerable personal attention to the matter.” He further asserted that the additional support was “absolutely necessary to tackle this overspend.” He added, “If we can get this down by millions of pounds then we will have made a significant contribution to helping the sustainability of our reserves.” Mr. Cannan described the situation as “a very serious matter which is why we are devoting so many resources to it,” but clarified that the new role does not include its own additional budget or staff. He also confirmed that Mr. Crookall would provide assistance with external relations and contribute to the implementation and advancement of the government’s strategic roadmap, known as the Island Plan.
