Dunfermline Athletic has terminated the contracts of manager James McPake and assistant Dave Mackay. This decision comes after their team, known as the Pars, was defeated by Morton on Saturday, a match in which former Dunfermline winger Owen Moffat played a role for Morton. The club currently occupies the second-to-last position in the Scottish Championship standings. The dismissals follow consecutive 2-0 away losses to Raith Rovers and Greenock Morton. Both of these opposing teams are also positioned in the lower half of the league table, contributing to concerns about potential relegation for Dunfermline. In a statement published on their official website, Dunfermline acknowledged the previous success of the coaching pair, stating: “The management duo made a great impact on arrival at the club, leading us to the League One title during a record-breaking season in 2022-23. “However, this season has proven challenging and the club board felt the need to make a change as we head into January.” McPake, a former centre-half who played for Livingston, Morton, Coventry City, Hibernian, and Dundee, commenced his managerial career with Dundee. During his three-year tenure there, he guided the Dens Park team to promotion to the Premiership. The 40-year-old manager previously guided the Pars to a sixth-place finish in their inaugural season following their return to the second tier. Presently, the team trails Hamilton Academical by three points, while maintaining a nine-point advantage over Airdrieonians, who are at the bottom of the league. Dunfermline has stated that the current board made the decision to terminate McPake’s employment, but only after “made the prospective investor in the club aware” of their plans. In August, the German football investment group Fussball GmbH initiated the sale process for the Fife-based club. In the interim, John McLaughlan, who serves as the current under-18 and reserve team coach, has been tasked with preparing the squad for Friday’s match against the Championship leaders. This decision by Dunfermline signifies that both Fife clubs competing in the Championship are now in search of new managers. This follows Neill Collins’ departure from Rovers on Saturday, after just three months at Stark’s Park, to assume leadership of Sacramento Republic in the USL Championship.
