The New Saints, currently holding the second position in the Cymru Premier with two matches fewer played than front-runners Penybont, could significantly enhance their prospects of progressing in the Uefa Conference League with a win against Shamrock Rovers on Thursday, according to manager Craig Harrison. Following their initial defeat to Fiorentina, the Saints climbed to 19th in the league standings last month after securing a 2-0 victory against Astana. In this competition, the top eight out of 36 participating teams proceed directly to the round of 16, while teams ranked from ninth to 24th enter the play-offs. Harrison stated, “If Shamrock Rovers win they are near enough through and if we win, we’re a point or two away.” He further estimated the points required for progression, adding, “I think eight [points] will probably get you into that 24, seven might with a good goal difference.” The current Cymru Premier champions are set to travel to the Tallaght Stadium in Dublin, having recently achieved a historic milestone for Welsh football. Their triumph against the Kazakhstan team, Astana, marked them as the inaugural domestic Welsh club to secure a victory in either the league or group stage of a significant European tournament. They now aim to build on that achievement when they face an opponent currently positioned second in the Irish Premier Division. Harrison commented, “It’s a very good club that have been doing really well, they are European veterans compared to ourselves.” He acknowledged the challenge, stating, “We know it’s going to be a tough game but we’ve been out twice to watch them live and we’ve obviously done as much homework as we can.” He concluded by emphasizing the importance of the match: “It’s one where both teams feel like they can get something from the game and obviously a victory for ourselves would put us on the right path and give us a great opportunity to move forward in the competition.” The Saints’ remaining group stage matches include encounters with Djurgarden from Sweden, Greek powerhouse Panathinaikos, and Celje of Slovenia.
