A recent survey in Jersey found that over a quarter of adults never use the bus. Statistics Jersey conducted the 2024 Opinions and Lifestyle survey, polling approximately 1,200 individuals, and determined that 28% do not utilize the public bus service. Around 60% of those surveyed indicated that more affordable fares and an increased frequency of buses would encourage them to use the service more often. Kevin Hart, director of LibertyBus, reported that following the company’s own survey last year, it had “put on more frequent services, more evening services and more Sunday services.” He mentioned that their survey garnered 3,200 respondents, and fare costs were not among the improvements suggested. Nigel Jones, founder of the climate change group Jersey in Transition, stressed the importance of people using buses to alleviate the island’s issues with congestion and air quality. He characterized the bus service as “pretty good” but expressed a wish for more frequent bus services. Mr. Jones noted that the Number 15 route, which operates between St Helier and the airport, was the most effective route due to its 15-minute interval. Mr. Hart stated that LibertyBus fares are more economical than many found in the UK. He affirmed: “Our cost of living is much higher here but the bus fares are cheaper.” Mr. Hart further explained that bus fares are free for individuals aged 65 and over, and young people under 19 can obtain “£20 per annum for unlimited travel.” Stay updated with BBC Jersey on X and Facebook.
