American actress Blake Lively has garnered public support from Hollywood figures America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel following her submission of a legal complaint against Justin Baldoni, her co-star in “It Ends With Us.” Ms. Lively initiated the legal action against Mr. Baldoni during the weekend, asserting claims of sexual harassment and an organized effort to “destroy” her reputation. On Saturday, Mr. Baldoni’s legal representatives informed the BBC that these allegations are “categorically false.” Ferrera, Tamblyn, and Bledel, who previously co-starred with Ms. Lively in the 2005 movie “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” released a collective statement on Instagram on Sunday, declaring their “stand with her in solidarity.” Colleen Hoover, the novelist behind “It Ends With Us,” also expressed her backing, characterizing Ms. Lively as “honest, kind, supportive and patient.” According to Ms. Lively’s legal counsel, the complaint stems from a meeting held earlier this year to confront “repeated sexual harassment and other disturbing behaviour” attributed to Mr. Baldoni, who is both her co-star and a producer for the film. In their statement, Ferrera, Tamblyn, and Bledel stated: “As Blake’s friends and sisters for over 20 years, we stand with her in solidarity as she fights back against the reported campaign waged to destroy her reputation.” They continued: “Throughout the filming of It Ends with Us, we saw her summon the courage to ask for a safe workplace for herself and colleagues on set, and we are appalled to read the evidence of a premeditated and vindictive effort that ensued to discredit her voice.” The statement further added: “Most upsetting is the unabashed exploitation of domestic violence survivors’ stories to silence a woman who asked for safety. The hypocrisy is astounding.” The statement also noted: “We are struck by the reality that even if a woman is as strong, celebrated, and resourced as our friend Blake, she can face forceful retaliation for daring to ask for a safe working environment,”. It concluded: “We are inspired by our sister’s courage to stand up for herself and others.” Counsel for Mr. Baldoni indicated that a crisis manager was engaged due to Ms. Lively’s alleged threats to disrupt the film’s production if her demands were not satisfied. In the dramatic film “It Ends With Us,” Ms. Lively portrays a character involved with a seemingly charming yet abusive boyfriend, a role undertaken by Mr. Baldoni. Colleen Hoover, the author of the source novel for the film, also expressed her backing via her Instagram stories, stating: “@BlakeLively you have been nothing but honest, kind, supportive and patient since the day we met.” She continued: “Thank you for being exactly the human that you are.” And added: “Never change. Never wilt.” Subsequently, she shared a link to a New York Times article titled “We Can Bury Anyone: Inside A Hollywood Smear Machine.” Hoover also re-shared the statement from Ferrera, Bledel, and Tamblyn, commenting: “This statement from these women and Blake’s ability to refuse to sit down and ‘be buried’ has been nothing short of inspiring.” A meeting involving Ms. Lively, Mr. Baldoni, other individuals associated with the film’s production, and Ms. Lively’s actor husband Ryan Reynolds occurred on January 4, 2024. Its purpose was to address “the hostile work environment” on set, as detailed in Ms. Lively’s legal submission. Mr. Baldoni participated in this meeting in his roles as co-chairman and co-founder of Wayfarer Studios, the company responsible for producing the film. He also served as the film’s director. Within the legal complaint, Ms. Lively’s attorneys contend that both Mr. Baldoni and Jamey Heath, Wayfarer’s chief executive officer, exhibited “inappropriate and unwelcome behaviour towards Ms Lively and others on the set of It Ends With Us.” The filing submitted to the California Civil Rights Department outlines 30 demands concerning the alleged misconduct of the two individuals, presented at the meeting with the aim of ensuring the film’s continued production. These demands included Ms. Lively’s request to cease any further discussion of Mr. Baldoni and Mr. Heath’s past “pornography addiction” with Ms. Lively or other crew members, to stop describing their own genitalia to Ms. Lively, and to have “no more adding of sex scenes, oral sex, or on camera climaxing by BL [Blake Lively] outside the scope of the script BL approved when signing onto the project,” according to the complaint. Furthermore, Ms. Lively insisted that Mr. Baldoni discontinue claiming he could communicate with her deceased father. Ms. Lively’s legal representatives additionally accuse Mr. Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios of orchestrating a “multi-tiered plan” designed to damage her reputation. She asserts this constituted “the intended result of a carefully crafted, coordinated, and resourced retaliatory scheme to silence her, and others from speaking out about the hostile environment that Mr Baldoni and Mr Heath created.” In response to the legal complaint, Bryan Freedman, Mr. Baldoni’s lawyer, stated on Saturday: “It is shameful that Ms Lively and her representatives would make such serious and categorically false accusations against Mr Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios and its representatives.” Mr. Freedman accused Ms. Lively of issuing multiple demands and threats, such as “threatening to not show up to set, threatening to not promote the film,” which he claimed would “ultimately leading to its demise during release, if her demands were not met.” He further alleged that Ms. Lively’s claims were “intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt and rehash a narrative in the media.” In a statement conveyed through her attorneys to the BBC, Ms. Lively remarked: “I hope that my legal action helps pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics to harm people who speak up about misconduct and helps protect others who may be targeted.” She also refuted any suggestion that she or her representatives had disseminated negative information about Mr. Baldoni or Wayfarer. The movie achieved commercial success, despite some critics suggesting it romanticized domestic violence.
