The implementation of a council’s voted name change has been postponed until March, attributed to uncertainty surrounding an upcoming government White Paper concerning devolution. Tewkesbury Borough Council, which held a vote in September, is slated to become North Gloucestershire Borough Council. However, the anticipated White Paper is expected to outline modifications to local government structures, a factor council leaders deem necessary to evaluate prior to proceeding with the renaming. Richard Stanley, the Leader of Tewkesbury Borough Council, stated: “We need to understand the government’s plans before making a decision. If there are plans for local government reorganisation, it may not make sense to change the name now.” The selection of the council’s new name aimed to more accurately represent the borough’s geographical scope and mitigate potential confusion with Tewkesbury Town Council. A preliminary launch of the new identity, including a new logo and name on the council’s website, was initially anticipated to commence this month. The initiative has garnered support from local businesses, who believe it will enhance the area’s visibility regionally and nationally. Nevertheless, some individuals have raised concerns regarding potential “hidden costs” in the future. The government had been scheduled to release the White Paper document last month, with the stated objective of enhancing local services. The council indicated its intention to re-evaluate the situation once the White Paper is made public, committing to launch the new name in March 2025, provided there are “no significant changes” to their existing plans.
