Liam Walsh’s ability to contribute has frequently been hampered by injury, a description that could apply to much of his three-year period as a Swansea City player. This pattern recently recurred after the midfielder made an impressive substitute appearance in Luton Town’s victory over Hull City on November 23. However, any opportunity for Walsh to secure a place in the Hatters’ starting lineup for their subsequent match, against Leeds United four days later, was derailed by a hamstring issue. Following Walsh’s absence from Luton’s 4-2 defeat at Norwich City last weekend, Swansea must now await confirmation regarding a potential reunion with their former player at Kenilworth Road this Saturday. Walsh was released by Swansea during the summer, three years after he initially joined the club on a free transfer from Bristol City. During his tenure in Wales, Walsh was a well-regarded figure at Swansea’s Fairwood training facility and occasionally demonstrated his clear talent to fans. Yet, it seemed that every time the former Everton youngster appeared poised to build momentum at Swansea, he was sidelined by fitness problems. In total, he accumulated just 10 league starts among 34 appearances in a Swans shirt. He scored two goals for the club, with the latter being a spectacular strike against Huddersfield Town in April. Ultimately, and with some reluctance, Swansea determined they could not justify offering Walsh a new contract. He subsequently signed a deal with Luton in August, following a training spell with the club. This season, he has featured 10 times, including three starts, although this total might have been higher were it not for a red card incident against Oxford United in October, when Walsh was dismissed for a rash tackle just 36 seconds after coming on as a substitute. With his suspension now long since served, Walsh is once again hoping for an injury-free run as the season progresses.
