Proposals have been submitted for the construction of a new motorway service station along the M55. The suggested location for this new facility is adjacent to junction 2 of the motorway, specifically in Woodplumpton, within Preston, Lancashire. Should these plans receive approval, this establishment would represent the sole service station situated within the city limits and the inaugural one along the M55 motorway connecting Preston to Blackpool. This proposed service station would be positioned at the northern extremity of Edith Rigby Way. This road, along with the junction 2 exit for Preston West, commenced operations 18 months prior, linking the M55 to the A583 Blackpool Road. Projections indicate that this facility, operating 24 hours a day, would generate 120 employment opportunities. Access to the site would be facilitated by an additional roundabout constructed at the motorway exit, thereby serving both eastbound and westbound traffic. Moto has presented preliminary plans to Preston City Council for a development encompassing a primary building. This structure is designed to provide hot and cold food options, restroom facilities, showers, and a dedicated children’s play area. The proposal outlines an eight-pump fuel forecourt intended for cars and vans, alongside a distinct refueling zone designated for HGVs and coaches. A total of 391 parking bays are planned for automobiles, with 50 of these equipped with electric vehicle charging stations. Additionally, provisions are made for 12 caravans, seven coaches, and 71 HGVs. The plans address the reported significant over-capacity of overnight rest areas for lorry drivers at the Lancaster M6 services, which is also managed by Moto. Moto has stated its intention to preserve existing trees, hedges, and ponds “where possible.” Furthermore, the company intends to partially clad both the main building and the filling station shop with a “green roof.”
