Complimentary bus journeys are being introduced in the period leading up to Christmas, aiming to encourage increased public transport usage. Commuters in Wokingham, Berkshire, will benefit from free travel every Saturday, starting November 16 and continuing until December 21. Reading Buses, Thames Valley Buses, and Carousel Buses are set to participate in this scheme, which receives its funding from the government. The initiative is expected to contribute to a reduction in the volume of cars on the roads during the busy festive period. Furthermore, select Sunday services will also be offered free of charge to coincide with local events. Visitors attending the Wokingham Extravaganza on November 24 will be provided with free rides on the 4 and X4 services. The scheme will also extend to the 13/14 and 850 Orange services on December 1, for those planning to visit the Woodley Winter Carnival. Approximately £400,000 in funding for this project will be sourced from the government’s Bus Back Better scheme, a national program designed to enhance bus services. This initiative comes at a time when the utilization of buses as a mode of transport has been found to be significantly lower than pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels. An executive report indicated that half of all current bus travel is undertaken for leisure, dining out, and shopping. The report stated: “Free bus travel is offered at a time when the cost of living and household expenditure is highest.” It further elaborated: “The proposal will allow residents to shop locally, supporting local businesses in villages, on high streets and in town centres.” For further updates, BBC Berkshire is available on Facebook, X (Twitter), or Instagram.
