Sally Stringer, a former sub-postmaster who operated the Beckford post office for two decades, has advocated for the closure of the Post Office. She was entangled in the controversy surrounding the organization’s defective IT system, which led her to use £50,000 from her personal savings to address accounting discrepancies generated by the flawed Horizon IT system. Ms. Stringer is among approximately 1,000 sub-postmasters who faced accusations of theft due to the software’s erroneous indication of missing funds, with some individuals tragically taking their own lives as a result. An investigation into the scandal has recently concluded, having gathered testimony from 298 witnesses, collected 780 witness statements, and processed over 2.2 million pages of disclosed documents. Ms. Stringer, notably one of the limited number of individuals who did not face prosecution, continues to await the compensation she was promised. Ms. Stringer stated, “At the end of the day, the government is culpable for this. It was a government company that stole money from their own employees. And now they’re making it extremely difficult to get… the money back. It’s scandalous.” A legal representative for the Department for Business and Trade informed the inquiry that the department acknowledged “every day that postmasters and their families continue to wait for full and fair financial redress is a day too long.” The lawyer further indicated that the department intends to persist in enhancing the existing compensation schemes. According to Ms. Stringer, individuals have forfeited their livelihoods and lives as a consequence of the scandal. She remarked, “You can never rebuild what you’ve lost. We were virtually bankrupt in Beckford and we got out. And actually it’s the best thing I’ve done. I’m not ostracised any more, I can actually see a little bit of peace and quiet, which is something I couldn’t down there.” However, she also added, “I want the Post Office closed. I don’t think it is fit for purpose any more.”
